Job Description

Serve as a pivotal mentor and primary point of contact for individuals navigating recovery from chemical dependency and mental health challenges. Drawing from personal lived experience, the Peer Support Specialist delivers empathetic support, practical life-skills guidance, crisis management, and case coordination across diverse community and field-based settings, empowering clients toward independence and long-term recovery.

Job Responsibilities & Requirements

Key Responsibilities:

  • Peer Mentorship & Recovery Guidance: Share personal lived recovery experience to guide clients through symptom management, relapse prevention, resource connection, and independent living skills.
  • Case Management & Advocacy: Maintain primary contact for client support needs and crisis response; manage case notes and care plans in an Electronic Health Record (EHR) system in compliance with Oregon Administrative Rules (OARs); advocate for client rights and service access.
  • Community Engagement & Transportation: Transport clients to community activities, medical/recovery appointments, and social integration events; participate in targeted community outreach for underserved populations.
  • Professional Standards: Maintain active state certifications, fulfill continuing education requirements, and uphold strong professional boundaries in high-stress situations.

Requirements:

  • Lived Experience: Must be an individual in personal recovery from substance use or mental health issues, willing to self-identify as a peer, with a minimum of two (2) consecutive years of abstinence from psychoactive substances.
  • Education & Certifications: High School Diploma or GED required (Associate degree or higher preferred); completion of an AMH-approved Peer Support training program; active Oregon state certification as a Recovery Mentor or Traditional Health Worker (THW).
  • Licensure & Driving Record: Valid Oregon Driver’s License with a clean driving record required for client transportation.
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency with Electronic Health Records (EHR) and strong verbal and written communication abilities.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Registered with the Oregon Health Authority (OHA) as a Traditional Health Worker and/or MHACBO as a Certified Recovery Mentor (CRM) (or willing to register/obtain dual mental health peer credentials).
  • 2+ years of experience in human services, non-profit organizations, or working with diverse/marginalized populations.
  • Bilingual language proficiency.
