Job Description
Behavioral Health Group (BHG) is seeking a dependable and compassionate Medication Nurse (LPN / LVN / RN) to join our outpatient opioid treatment center. Operating during early morning hours, the Medication Nurse is primarily responsible for accurately dispensing prescribed medications (such as methadone), assessing patient appropriateness for dosing, conducting toxicological screenings, and maintaining strict medication inventory reconciliation in compliance with DEA, state, and Joint Commission regulations.
Job Responsibilities & Requirements
Key Responsibilities
- Medication Administration & Dosing:
- Administer methadone and other prescribed medications in strict accordance with physician orders and state dosing protocols.
- Evaluate patients pre- and post-administration to ensure clinical appropriateness for dosing.
- Prepare, package, and coordinate courtesy and vacation doses per agency procedures.
- Inventory, Dispensing & Compliance:
- Receive, verify, and reconcile daily and weekly medication shipments in accordance with DEA regulations and company policies.
- Report and document any medication discrepancies immediately to the Nursing Supervisor and Program Director.
- Maintain comprehensive, accurate patient dosing logs and medical records in the Electronic Health Record (EHR) system.
- Clinical Screening & Laboratory Duties:
- Collect urine drug specimens, process test strips, operate centrifuges, perform breathalyzer tests, and track lab results.
- Complete phlebotomy certification if required by center operations.
- Assist with patient physicals, laboratory orders, medical supply inventories, and infection control standards.
- Interdisciplinary Collaboration:
- Communicate patient progress, behavioral observations, and clinical concerns regularly with counselors, physicians, and site leadership during weekly treatment team meetings.
- Assist with onboarding and training new nursing staff as needed.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Licensure & Certifications:
- Active, unrestricted LPN, LVN, or RN license in the State of Minnesota required.
- Current CPR and First Aid certifications required.
- Valid driver’s license required.
- Experience & Skills:
- Clinical experience in addiction medicine, chemical dependency, or behavioral health strongly preferred.
- Proficiency operating dosing equipment, centrifuges, breathalyzers, physical assessment tools, and standard office computers/EHR systems.
- Strong multi-tasking skills with the ability to maintain composure and precision in a high-volume, early-morning clinical environment.
Physical Demands & Working Conditions
- Environment: Outpatient opioid treatment center (standard medical office conditions). Regular exposure to individuals with substance use disorders, mental health conditions, or infectious diseases; protective equipment (PPE) provided as needed.
- Physical Demands: Prolonged standing during dosing hours; alternating sitting, walking, bending, stooping, and keyboarding; high attention to detail under tight morning schedules.
